When I searched Google with the words ” English, yoga, Tokyo“, I found many articles, but they were all written before 2020, and many of the studios introduced in the articles have moved locations or closed, so the information was outdated. Some of the sites were written in 2024, but contained information about studios that were closed. Therefore, I made my own list of studios in Tokyo where you can take yoga classes in English.
You’ll find some of the best yoga studios in Tokyo that offer instruction in English.
New York Style YOGA ( Shibuya )
It’s a vinyasa yoga studio located about 15 minutes walk from Shibuya Station.
Vinyasa yoga involves breathing and moving in sync with music. More than half of the students are foreigners, and the ratio of male to female is about even, with slightly more guys than ladies. The studio owner, Mika leads very sweaty, unique vinyasa class, which is called New York Style YOGA every weekend.
And they offer ASHTANGA YOGA led and Mysore Classes by skilled teachers.
They opened in 2024, April, but are quickly growing as an international yoga studio. You can see it on GoogleMaps and MeetUp.
Santhosha ( Omotesando )
All of their classes are conducted in English.
The most popular and main teacher is Vibhor, who is a very skilled Indian yoga teacher, kind to everyone. They have a special program which is Himalayan Yoga.
In Himalayan class, partner work is often done to deepen the stretches. At the end of the class, each student will perform a challenging pose under the guidance of the teacher.
Nami Yoga ( Akasaka )
Nami Yoga is a yoga studio where relatively gentle yoga classes are held. All classes are low intensity. The studio is very beautiful and comfortable. The owner Nami used to teach at Nami Yoga Studio, but currently doesn’t have her regular class on the schedule.
The trial offer, which costs 5,000 yen and allows you to take three classes within one week from your first class, is popular.
Yoga Tree ( Daikanyama )
Yoga Tree is a very luxury and sophisticated Iyengar studio. Michael is the head teacher of this studio. I heard from members that his classes usually have 20 to 30 students.
And Dominica from Shizen Yoga Studio, who has been teaching Iyengar yoga in Japan for many years, is also one of main teachers.
This is an authentic Iyengar yoga studio with wall ropes, yoga chairs, a wide variety of props, etc., which are hard to find in Japan. We recommend taking a class with the main teacher.
Retreats also seem to be held frequently and are popular among members.
Mint Mat Yoga ( Hiroo )
At Mint Yoga, you can take ISHTA yoga classes. There are about one third of the classes in English.
The trial, which allows you to take all classes for one week for 5,000 yen for the first time, is popular with foreign tourists, but it may become limited to local residents in the future.( I’m not sure at all though! )
The content of the classes is simple and easy, so if you are a yoga lover from overseas, it might be too easy for you. The studio is very beautiful.
International Yoga Center (IYC)
IYC is an Ashtanga yoga studio founded by Ken Hamakura, Japan’s leading Ashtanga yoga expert, and has several branches within Tokyo.
(Omotesando, Jinbocho, Ogikubo, Setagaya, Kudanshita ) Ken teaches Mysore Class in Omotesando branch, but an additional fee will be charged on top of the regular ticket.
The teachers speaking English, who are Tom and Joy run BOHDY YOGA TOKYO studio separately, but it’s actually the same studio as IYC in Omotesando.
Under the light Yoga (UTL)
UTL is a long-established yoga studio that has been using foreign instructors for a long time. But nowadays, the ratio of overseas instructors among all instructors is not so high, and most instructors are Japanese.
In the timetable linked below, all classes are written in English, which makes it easy to understand, but I assume that not all instructors can speak English. Because that’s how Japan is.
If the instructor’s name is Japanese, it’s a good idea to ask before taking a class whether the instructor can guide you in English.
Yoga studios that are currently out of business
These studios are listed on almost every other site that lists yoga studios in Tokyo that offer English classes, but in fact they are no longer in business.
